Heartbreak Hill

Coming from Harecastle Tunnel towards Middlewich you pass along a stretch of Trent and Mersey Canal known affectionately (!) as Heartbreak Hill. This is because of the many locks situated in ones and twos every half mile or so - just far enough apart to get back on to the boat between, but not far enough apart to make and drink a cup of coffee!!

Most of the locks are in pairs - so that more boats can negotiate the hill at once.

However, in some places the second lock has been abandoned - creating a wonderful bottleneck when two boats are ascending or descending the locks together!!

This is the Pink Church at Hassall Green. It looks even brighter in real life and has turquoise doors. Inside it is painted in slightly more tasteful colours - shades of green. Nick and Susan went to morning service there and were the congregation!!
